Fatty acid degradation

During fatty acid breakdown, fats present in the muscle cell and subcutaneous fat tissue as triglycerides are split into their components glycerol and fatty acids. The fatty acids are further split and their components (C atoms) are fed into the citric acid cycle after conversion into acetyl coenzyme A.

Fatty acid breakdown requires more oxygen than glycogen breakdown.
