Lipolysis is also known in common parlance as fat burning. During low and medium intensity exercise, fats are used for energy production. The proportion of lipolysis increases with increasing load duration. Mobilization of lipolysis can be improved by basic endurance training (GA1).

The importance of fat metabolism for the athlete during exercise lies in the protection of the carbohydrate store. The greater the proportion of fat metabolism at the same load, the fewer carbohydrates are consumed. These are then available longer for peak loads.
