Heart rate is used in endurance sports as a parameter for intensity control of training load. A training heart rate is therefore the heart rate at which you should train in a certain training range. Depending on the selected training range, the training heart rate is defined by an upper and a lower limit. The corresponding training session now takes place within this heart rate zone.
The upper and lower limits of training heart rate should be determined by performance diagnostics.
The classic training areas are delineated as follows:
- Compensation range < 60% HFmax
- Basic endurance 1 < 75% HRmax
- Basic endurance 2 < 80% HRmax
- Development range < 90% HFmax
- Peak range 90-100% HFmax
Since different parameters such as stress, caffeine intake and sleep have a sometimes strong influence on heart rate, training according to performance data with a power meter is preferred for ambitious athletes.
