L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine is a vitamin-like nutrient consisting of the two amino acids lysine and methionine. L-carnitine has an important function in fat metabolism. Fatty acids can only be transported through the mitochondrial membranes bound to L-carnitine. L-carnitine is therefore used in connection with diets as well as in endurance sports. Athletes need fatty acids to use energy, but also use L-carnitine to promote regeneration.
The absorption of L-carnitine occurs mainly through meat (lat. carne: meat). With a low-meat diet or with vegetarians and vegans, significantly lower carnitine muscle contents are measured and an additional supplementation with L-carnitine can make sense.
